Language matters

Online-Anmeldung

07.08.2024, 9:00 – 18:00 Uhr, 5 € Verpflegungspauschale

Language isn’t just about communication — it’s a powerful tool that influences politics, everyday interactions, and our perception of the world. In our workshop, we want to convey an understanding of the mechanisms and scope of the design of language. Join our workshop “Language Matters” if you want to learn more about language’s impact on society, politics as well as on individual persons and their everyday life.
Together, we will take a closer look at different questions that arise in the context of spoken and written language: What power does language have and where does it originate from? Why is it important how things and persons are being portrayed in language? Can language be violent?
In our workshop, one focus will be put on language in National Socialism, which was used as an important means of creating an ostracizing reality. Then we will observe what happened to the German language after 1945 and discuss how and why language changes over time. By looking at current debates on language, for example so called ‘hate speech’ and ‘speech bans’, we relate everything we learnt to the present and reconsider our own understanding of language.
