We will have a look at scenarios in different countries and how it has changed after the outbreak of the Second World War. We are going to learn more about the people who have provided help to the Jews in hiding and discuss their motivations and attitudes. How the situation of Jewish people looked like at that time, who helped them (and who did not) – those are questions on which we will be looking for the answer together. Finally, we will also have a look at the concept of the Righteous Among the Nations.

It is often said that „those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it“ (Santayanna). However it’s been also said that, „those who see unwarranted likeness to the past are disposed to misapply its lessons“ (Gilovich). How can we then draw any conclusion from the holocaust and its atrocities? philosophers have continuously argued about how ordinary people can commit evil. And, at the same time, how it’s difficult to describe those who committed evil as ordinary. In this workshop we will leave the philosophers behind and use psychological research that looked into these questions to understand how people can commit harmful deeds. We will also look into psychological research that attempted to understand authority, responsibility, and morality. To understand what we can conclude from psychological research, we will also focus on the „scientific method“ and how it allows to uncover truths.

Online-Anmeldung5. & 7. August, jeweils von 09.00 – 18:00 mit Mittagspause und Verpflegung, 5€ Pauschale
Our workshop will focus on the lives and memories of those who escaped persecution by the National Socialists and survived the time in the concentration camps. After the liberation they faced a variety of developments in post-war societies and tried to come to terms with their individual past. Some returned to their home countries, others emigrated to different states. Some got involved in politics, some used arts to share their memories, others did not talk about their experiences at all, neither in public nor in their respective families.
The first main part of the workshop is going to focus on the developments in different post-war societies. Subsequently we are going to explore different ways that individuals chose to come to terms with their past. There will be the possibility to talk to an eyewitness. After that we want to take a closer look at the memorial site and the city of Dachau, which nowadays both claim to be “sites of learning”.

In our one-day workshop we invite you to study the methods of dealing with the rhetoric of exclusion. Additionally, a trainer will practice our abilities to understand its mechanisms – and to respond to them.
Popular Culture in Nazi Germany
Online-Anmeldung5. August, von 09.00 – 18:00 mit Mittagspause und Verpflegung, 5€ Pauschale
The aim of the workshop is to provide an overview of government-approved art used for the purposes of propaganda under National Socialism, bearing in mind the general cultural censorship at the time. Through examples from literature, theater, music, movies and photography, we will explore how the glorification of war as well as the ideals of racial purity and of German spirit were present in then popular culture. The notion of modern Degenerate Art regarded as corrupt and un-German will equally be addressed, as we discuss the banning of works by Jewish and other controversial artists from the perspectives of discrimination and restrictions to creative freedom. The participants will therefore be invited to reflect upon the role of art not only in the service of propaganda but also as a means of self-expression pertaining to freedom of speech.
